Insulin is a two-chain polypeptide hormone produced by the beta cells of pancreatic islets. Insulin regulates the cellular uptake, utilization, and storage of glucose, amino acids, and fatty acids, and inhibits the breakdown of glycogen, protein, and fat. BioBov single-chain insulin (SCI) is a bovine insulin analog.
Recombinant BioBov SCI and CBD-SCI (SCI fused to a cellulose binding domain) are produced in N. Tabacum leaves.
Recombinant BioBov SCI and CBD-SCI are comparable to a commercially available highly purified (>95%) counterpart, as determined by a cell-proliferation assay in HCT116 control cells.
